As of early 2026, the U.S. Department of Treasury will cease minting pennies. While pennies will remain legal tender and continue to circulate, their production has officially ended. This change may impact cash transactions and coin handling for both consumers and businesses.

NBT is no longer able to order pennies from the Federal Reserve, which may limit our ability to fulfill change orders for pennies going forward. In order to ensure that we can serve our customer coin needs, we will implement the following procedures effective November 3, 2025:

  • Penny orders are limited to $5 to business and consumer customers only (as supplies allow)
  • We will no longer supply boxes or bags of pennies to customers

What This Means for You

Cash Transactions: When paying with cash, you might notice that amounts are rounded to the nearest nickel.

Coin Deposits: You can still deposit pennies into your account. We encourage you to utilize our Coin Machine (La Grange | Main Bank Lobby) for easy and efficient coin deposits.

For Our Business Customers

Coin Orders: Due to limited availability, we can no longer fulfill large coin orders. Please plan accordingly and manage your coin inventory.

Change Handling: Review your cash handling procedures to accommodate the rounding of transactions and ensure smooth operations.
